Saudade - stop motion film
Saudade (meaning a feeling of longing or nostalgia) was a passion project which I worked on with 2 other friends and a wonderful team during college. Growing up watching cartoons like Shaun the sheep and Pingu instilled in me a deep appreciation for this style of animation and the profound emotions it can convey. With the guidance of our professor and the perfect team team sharing similar interests, Saudade was made. It tells the story of a boy (now an adult) who seeks comfort in the memories he shared with his grandmother during his childhood. The story is set up in a rural village in India.

Most of the short animation films that have won hearts and have been critically acclaimed, have one thing in common. IMPACT.
Impact using mundane scenes with deep rooted messages that hits a chord with your heart and make you notice the unnoticeable. For our venture, we have used a similar approach, entwining urban life with the nostalgia of simpler times with grandparents present around. Post pandemic, life seems to have become far more challenging and people wished if they could buy some mental peace. How does one unwind in this hustle-bustle, by turning back to those simpler times and appreciate all little things life has to offer.

My Thoughts
-
Saudade was an extraordinary project for our entire team. Despite facing numerous challenges—when it felt like almost everything that could possibly go wrong did—the team’s unwavering dedication made it possible to screen Saudade on time. The experience underscored the importance of trust in collaboration and highlighted how diverse skill sets can come together to create something remarkable.

While the project was a success, it also came with valuable lessons. From setting up the studio to overcoming hurdles like acquiring an editing tool, every step presented its own challenges. We believe there is still much room for refinement and are excited about the potential to bring even greater finesse to Saudade in the future.
